The head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Vladimir Makei, did not die from a "long illness", but committed suicide. Nasha Niva received such information from four unrelated sources from the field of medicine and public administration.
According to them, Makei, who died on November 26 last year, was hard pressed by Alexander Lukashenko's cooling towards him and the collapse of the course he was leading. He felt unnecessary, and sometimes just out of place. Makei knew the Lukashenka administration was looking for candidates to replace him, the sources say.
64-year-old Vladimir Makei belonged to the liberal wing of Lukashenko, the newspaper notes. Since 2000, after the disappearance of Viktor Gonchar and Yuri Zakharenko, Makei began working as Lukashenka's personal assistant. In 2008-2012, he was the head of the presidential administration. On August 20, 2012, he was appointed to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Makei's death was largely ignored in the state media. It was not even the second or third piece of news in the news releases, the publication points out. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov did not attend the funeral of the Belarusian colleague.
