“Putin thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. But he was wrong.” Statement by Biden, who met with Zelensky in Kyiv

The White House released a statement by US President Joe Biden, who today arrived in Kiev and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Insider quotes it in full:

As the world prepares for the anniversary of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, I am in Kiev to meet with President Zelensky and reaffirm our unwavering and unwavering commitment to Ukraine's democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

When Putin launched his invasion nearly a year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He thought he could outlive us. But he was wrong.

Today in Kyiv, I am meeting with President Zelenskiy and his team for an expanded discussion of our support for Ukraine. I will announce another shipment of critical equipment, including artillery ammunition, anti-tank systems and air surveillance radar, to help protect the Ukrainian people from aerial bombardment. Later this week, we will announce additional sanctions against the Russian elite and companies that seek to circumvent sanctions or fuel the Russian war machine. Over the past year, the United States has built a coalition of nations from the Atlantic to the Pacific to help defend Ukraine with unprecedented military, economic, and humanitarian support, and that support will continue.

I also look forward to traveling to Poland to meet with President Duda and the leaders of our allies on the eastern flank, and to make remarks about how the United States will continue to rally the world in support of the people of Ukraine and the core values of humanity of the UN Charter that unite us all over the world.
