The German Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to Russia. In particular, this applies to trips to Russian cities close to the border with Ukraine – Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Voronezh, Rostov, Krasnodar.
“From February 20 to February 26, 2023, the Russian government plans to hold a number of events, including holidays on February 23 and 24. Be especially vigilant and careful, avoid large crowds of people, ”the message says.
Those Germans who are already in Russia are advised to exercise caution and avoid crowds.
The statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs separately states that the Russian authorities consider holders of dual citizenship exclusively as citizens of Russia. This also applies to a possible draft into the Russian armed forces. In the event of such situations, Germany will not be able to provide such people with consular assistance.
In mid-February, the US Embassy urged its citizens not to travel to Russia and those in the country to leave, including due to the risk of mobilization. This is stated on the website of the diplomatic mission.
The embassy said that the Russian authorities could deny Americans in the country the recognition of their dual citizenship and deprive them of access to US consular assistance. In addition, Americans may be detained, mobilized, or not allowed to leave the country.
