Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was ready to compete for the post of NATO Secretary General. He announced this on the air of the Ukrainian National Telethon.
Journalists asked the politician if he was going to go to work in NATO, he replied that work in this direction was underway. “I have to announce that there is such an idea. <…> I consider myself as a candidate. This is a very good position, an important one. NATO is now stronger than ever,” Johnson said.
At the end of July, The Telegraph, citing several sources, wrote that Johnson could become the next Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). However, a number of interlocutors of the publication suggested at the same time that French President Emmanuel Macron could veto the election of Boris Johnson as head of the bloc.
The current NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, was appointed to the post in 2014 for a five-year term. In 2019, his mandate was extended until October 2022. Due to the war between Russia and Ukraine that began on February 24, 2022, on March 24, Stoltenberg was left as secretary of the alliance until September 30, 2023.
