The construction of a fence on the eastern border of Finland has begun, the fence will be installed to protect against Russia and Russians illegally trying to enter the territory of an EU country. This is reported by the Finnish edition of Yle. Excavation work and clearing of the territory from trees are now carried out. The first part of the fence, a short test fence, is scheduled to be built before the end of June, and will be used by authorities to evaluate the impact of snow on the fence.
Part of the fence will pass through private lands, so the authorities will also have to negotiate with the owners. According to officials, these negotiations are proceeding successfully and in accordance with the construction plans, compensation will be paid to people.
A road will be built next to the fence for the movement of border patrols and repair work. The test fence will be three meters high, and barbed wire will be stretched over it. It will be equipped with surveillance cameras capable of working at night and lighting, as well as speakers in the most important areas.
In total, the planned length of the fence will be: 55 kilometers from Aida to South-Eastern Finland, seven kilometers to North Karelia and five kilometers each to Kainuu and Lapland. Construction will take place between 2023 and 2025.
