“Aviatorshchina”: Part of the Superjet 100 fleet in Russia may stop due to running out of spark plugs

Part of the Russian fleet of Superjet 100 aircraft may stop due to the fact that the country has run out of American spark plugs for Russian-French SaM-146 engines. This was written by the Telegram channel "Aviatorshchina".

PowerJet, which manufactures SaM-146 engines for SSJ-100 aircraft, stopped deliveries and technical support of its power plants in Russia last spring due to EU sanctions. Including stopped supplying spark plugs, which were produced for the PowerJet by the American company Unision Industries.

The SaM146 engines are a joint project of the French concern Safran and the Russian NPO Saturn, which is part of the United Engine Corporation (UEC) of Rostec. Until March 2022, they were produced and serviced by the PowerJet joint venture in Rybinsk, but the repair of the hot part of the engine was carried out only in France. Such engines were installed only on the SSJ100, now they plan to replace them with domestic PD-8s from UEC-Saturn.

In early February, the head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Yuri Slyusar, told Vedomosti that the replacement of the Franco-Russian SaM146 engines on the Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft with domestic PD-8s, including the cost of the turbines themselves, is comparable to the residual value of this aircraft.

Work on the production of prototypes of the SSJ New with PD-8 engines is planned to be completed in 2022 and 2023, according to a new program for the development of the aviation industry until 2030.

The Insider previously wrote that since mid-2022, the number of accidents in Russian aviation has been growing, including landing gear incidents.
