Finnish President signs law on country’s accession to NATO

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö signed the laws on the country's accession to NATO.

On March 1, the Finnish parliament approved a bill on joining NATO. 184 deputies voted “for”, 7 “against”, one “empty vote” was also cast, 7 more deputies were absent.

Last May, Sweden and Finland officially announced that they would apply to join NATO. The decision to abandon the previous policy of neutrality was prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

For the final entry of countries into NATO, all three dozen states that are members of the alliance must support the applications of applicants. Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that both countries could be "accepted to NATO with open arms", but this process requires unanimity among the 30 existing members of the alliance.
