Biden on WSJ journalist arrested in Russia: ‘Let him go’

US President Joe Biden has appealed to Russian authorities about the arrest of Wall Street Journal Moscow bureau correspondent Evan Gershkovich.

An NBC journalist asked Biden "what is his message to Russia" in connection with the arrest of Gershkovich. "Let him go," he replied.

Evan Gershkovich was detained on March 29 on suspicion of espionage. He was later arrested.

According to Russian agencies, the WSJ journalist, on instructions from the United States, was allegedly collecting information about one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex, which constitutes a state secret. “The Wall Street Journal categorically denies the FSB allegations and demands the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter Evan Gershkovich. We stand in solidarity with Evan and his family,” the WSJ said in a statement.

Prior to his arrest, Gershkovich was in Yekaterinburg and was preparing material on the attitude of Russians towards the Wagner PMC. He managed to interview a local resident Yaroslav Shirshikov. The Insider contacted Shirshikov, and he told what they talked about with the journalist. Read more about it here .

Gershkovich is 31 years old and has been working as a correspondent in Russia since 2017. Prior to joining the WSJ, he worked for Agence France-Presse and the Moscow Times.
