“Kommersant”: In Russia, for the first time, a case was opened against an officer who did not prevent the shelling

In the military investigative system of Russia, for the first time, a criminal case was opened for violating the rules of combat duty for the timely detection and repulsion of a sudden attack on the territory of the country (part 2 of article 340 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Kommersant writes about this, citing sources. The case was initiated by the 1st Department of the Military Investigation Department of the TFR for the Western Military District.

According to them, the only suspect in the case is a Russian officer who was on alert during the shelling. He faces up to 10 years in prison. The officer is accused of the fact that in the spring of 2022 he was unable to prevent the rocket attack of the Armed Forces of the Belgorod Region. As a result, 7 Russian soldiers were killed, 43 people were wounded and shell-shocked, 15 pieces of equipment were destroyed and 30 pieces of equipment were damaged for a total of 89 million rubles.

Sources of Kommersant claim that the military man, against whom the case was filed, did not provide sufficient cover for the airspace with air defense systems. In addition, he seriously miscalculated in organizing the service of the unit entrusted to him, which is why he is also charged with an article on abuse of office (part 3 of article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to the decisions of the military courts, the officer has been in custody since May. He does not admit his guilt.
