The ex-rector of the Tomsk Polytechnic University “paid” a salary to a fictitious employee. He was charged with embezzlement of 5 million rubles

The former rector of the Tomsk Polytechnic University, Dmitry Sednev, was charged with embezzlement of 5 million rubles (on an especially large scale) and abuse of power for inventing an employee, “employing” him and “paying” his salary, actually embezzling funds. This is reported by the Tomsk police, without naming names. The media claim that Sednev appears in the report.

According to investigators, an official of the Tomsk Polytechnic University used his official powers "in order to employ another person, while he knew for certain that this person would not fulfill his labor duties." From November 2021 to January 2023, a fictitious employee was paid wages and bonuses in the amount of more than 5 million rubles. Now the defendant has been chosen a measure of restraint in the form of a written undertaking not to leave the country.

On April 4, the press service of the university reported that Dmitry Sednev left the post for health reasons and of his own free will. The university has said that he will continue to do science and plans to complete his doctoral work. In the “Overheard at TPU” group, they were interested in why Sednev did not transfer to a quieter position in order to “have time to pay attention to health.” Tomsk journalist Stanislav Mikryukov replied that Sednev and one of the vice-rectors of the university were searched in February 2023 related to "grant fraud".

The part of the article on abuse of power, under which the case was initiated, provides for up to four years in prison. For embezzlement, Sednev faces up to ten years in prison.
