The Pacific Fleet has been put on alert and placed on high alert as part of a surprise inspection. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the purpose of the surprise check is “to increase the ability of the Russian Armed Forces to repel the aggression of a potential enemy from sea directions.”
He also stated that in the course of checking the Pacific Fleet, it is necessary to work out actions to repel the enemy’s landing on the southern Kuril Islands and Sakhalin.
The sudden check is being carried out in three stages, said Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff: at the first stage, the fleet is put on full combat readiness, the air defense forces and aviation units are checked. At the second stage, the deployment of permanent readiness forces from base points to combat training areas will be ensured, and at the third stage, combat training tasks will be worked out.
