An attempted military coup is underway in Sudan, the Local Reaction Forces announced the capture of airports and the presidential palace

In the Sudanese capital Khartoum, clashes broke out between the army and the Local Response Force (RSF), reports Al Jazeera.

The RSF said it had taken control of the presidential palace, the residence of the army commander and Khartoum International Airport, as well as a military base in the northern city of Merov, Reuters reported . Their statement also says that they have taken over the airports in Merow and El Obeid in the west. Al Jazeera notes that these claims have not yet been independently verified.

The shooting was heard in the area of ​​​​the headquarters of the Sudanese army and the Ministry of Defense in the center of Khartoum. The correspondent of the publication reports that he heard shooting in the area of ​​​​the presidential palace in the northern part of the capital.

Due to what is happening, Sudan's international airport has stopped receiving flights.

Earlier it was reported that several thousand soldiers occupied the center of Khartoum. The army said the RSF tried to attack its troops at several positions. The local reaction forces, in turn, said they were attacked by the army.

Disagreements between the forces began on Thursday, when the army said the recent actions of the RSF, in particular in Merov, were illegal and uncoordinated.

In 2019, as a result of a military coup, the Sudanese army removed Omar al-Bashir from the presidency and dismissed the government. A military council led by the first vice-president, Defense Minister Awad bin Auf, seized power in the country. In October 2021, another military coup took place in Sudan. Then the military arrested members of the transitional government that was formed after the 2019 coup d'état.
