A court in Tehran has sentenced ten servicemen in the case of the crash of a passenger plane of a Ukrainian airline in January 2020, Al Arabia reports .
The commander of the air defense unit was sentenced to ten years in prison, while nine other defendants were sentenced to terms ranging from one to three years.
A passenger Boeing 737-800 bound for Kyiv crashed near the Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran immediately after taking off early in the morning on January 8. On board were 167 passengers and 9 crew members: 11 citizens of Ukraine (including 9 crew members), 82 citizens of Iran, 63 of Canada, 10 of Sweden, 4 of Afghanistan, 3 of Germany and the UK. They all died.
The Iranian military admitted that it "inadvertently" shot down the aircraft, mistaking it for a cruise missile.
