Project “People of Baikal” found an unknown cemetery of Wagnerites near Irkutsk

"People of Baikal" discovered a previously unknown burial place of mercenaries from the PMC Wagner near Irkutsk. According to a publication on the project's website, the death of some of the people buried there, their relatives learned from journalists.

At the Alexander cemetery, 11 km from Irkutsk, there is an "Alley of Heroes", located at the main entrance. There are buried 13 servicemen who died in the war in Ukraine, including mobilized and volunteers. In the far corner of the same cemetery, journalists found another burial, previously unknown: 57 graves of mercenaries from the Wagner PMC. As it turned out, this site was cleared of trees recently – in September-October 2022.

Most of the graves do not have photographs, only crosses with names and dates of birth and death, as well as wreaths with the PMC emblem. In open sources, reports of the death of only five of all the Wagnerians buried here were found. The death of the rest was not reported anywhere. At least 43 mercenaries were recruited in the colonies, their sentences were found in the bases of the courts. 17 of them were in prison for murder, the rest for theft and drug-related crimes. The youngest of the victims was 20 years old, the oldest – 62 years old. Judging by the indicated dates of death, all these people died between January and early March 2023.

After talking with the relatives of the Wagnerites, the authors of the investigation found that the families of the dead mercenaries received five million rubles in compensation, as well as 100 thousand rubles for the funeral. If relatives are not found, the PMC buries the mercenaries themselves.
