Propagandist Andrey Karaulov was charged with illegal entrepreneurial activity (Part 1, Article 171 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Kommersant writes about this, citing sources in law enforcement agencies.
According to data compiled by the Main Directorate for Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Moscow police, Karaulov owns 50 apartments in Moscow and illegally rents them out through intermediaries for four years, from 2019 to 2023. On this, the propagandist, according to the investigation, earned at least 4.8 million rubles. If Karaulov is found guilty, this amount will be seized. Also, the apartments themselves, which are the “crime tool,” will be taken away from him.
The apartments include one and two bedroom apartments. They are scattered all over Moscow, including the city center, and are mostly registered with Karaulov's relatives. Their total estimated cost is more than 1 billion rubles. Karaulov's official income for the period from 2016 to 2022 is about 5.3 million rubles.
For Karaulov, this is the third criminal case in six months. The previous two concerned slander (part 5 of article 281.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). At the end of 2022, a libel case was initiated against the head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, and in March 2023, against director Nikita Mikhalkov.
