At least 470 children have died in Ukraine since the beginning of the war – Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, at least 470 children have died, more than 949 have been injured of varying severity. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, emphasizing that these figures are not final, the calculation of losses in the places of hostilities and in the temporarily occupied and liberated territories continues.

Most of all children suffered in Donetsk (452), Kharkiv (275) and Kyiv (127) regions. Also, 94 children were injured in the Kherson region, another 89 in Zaporozhye, 86 victims in the Mykolaiv region, 68 in Chernihiv, 66 victims each in the Lugansk and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

The day before, on April 21, as a result of Russian shelling of the village of New York, Donetsk region, a 9-year-old boy was wounded, the report says.

Since the beginning of the invasion, Russia has also taken children out of the occupied regions of Ukraine, which violates international agreements. Orphans are taken from the territories of the "DPR" and "LPR" to be transferred to Russian families. In February 2023, it turned out that in Russia there is a network of "re-educating" institutions where Ukrainian children who were taken out during the war are placed. Investigators at the Conflict Observatory at the Yale University Health Institute in the United States said that at least six thousand children passed through such institutions at the bases of holiday camps. In April, 31 children from the annexed Crimea were returned to Ukraine, buses with them entered the country through Belarus.
