In the center of Jerusalem, a car drove into a crowd of people, injuring at least six people. A 70-year-old man is seriously injured, according to The Jerusalem Post. The police say there has been a terrorist attack. According to preliminary data, the driver is a 30-year-old resident of the Palestinian Beit Safafa district in East Jerusalem, the father of five children. The terrorist was killed on the spot by an armed civilian, the police said.
The attack took place on Remembrance Day, Israel's national day of mourning. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a Memorial Day speech minutes after the attack. “These terrorist attacks are carried out with the expectation that they will kick us out of here. If they could, they would have killed us all,” the prime minister said.
At 20:00, a mourning siren will sound in Israel, after which a memorial candle lighting ceremony will be held at the Wailing Wall with the participation of President Yitzhak Herzog, Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Chief of Staff Herzi HaLevi.
