Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on life imprisonment for "treason", as well as on tougher criminal liability for "sabotage" and "international terrorism".
The maximum punishment for committing sabotage has increased from 15 years in prison to 20, for international terrorism – from 10 to 12 years. Under the article on high treason, the maximum punishment was previously 20 years in prison, but now life imprisonment is being introduced.
The package of amendments was adopted by the State Duma last week. The bill also provides for punishment for "facilitating" the execution of decisions of international organizations. For actions that created a threat of loss of life and aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country, the maximum punishment is now 20 years instead of 15. Earlier, the Lefortovsky District Court of Moscow sent E.Yu. Boyko to a pre-trial detention center in the case of “treason” (Article 275 of the Criminal Code).
