Putin introduced life imprisonment for “treason”

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on life imprisonment for "treason", as well as on tougher criminal liability for "sabotage" and "international terrorism".

The maximum punishment for committing sabotage has increased from 15 years in prison to 20, for international terrorism – from 10 to 12 years. Under the article on high treason, the maximum punishment was previously 20 years in prison, but now life imprisonment is being introduced.

The package of amendments was adopted by the State Duma last week. The bill also provides for punishment for "facilitating" the execution of decisions of international organizations. For actions that created a threat of loss of life and aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country, the maximum punishment is now 20 years instead of 15. Up to 20 years, the responsibility for committing actions that created a threat of loss of life and aimed at destabilizing the situation in the country is toughened (was 15); For facilitating terrorist activities, the minimum threshold for punishment is increased from 5 years to 7.

Earlier, the Lefortovsky District Court of Moscow sent E.Yu. Boyko to a pre-trial detention center in the case of “treason” (Article 275 of the Criminal Code). This is already the fifth such known case in the last six days, since April 22. The day before, the FSB asked R. N. Rasulov to be arrested under the same article. On April 25, it became known about the arrest of Dovgan A.S. for “treason”, on April 26 , Plyska Yu.V. was arrested under the same article. No other details were reported about them. Before that, on April 22, it became known that the court had arrested Dmitry Kicha on charges of "treason", more information was provided about him. Kicha until March 2021 served as deputy head of the testing laboratory of the Promtekhnologiya weapons factory in the capital, where hunting and sporting rifles are produced under the ORSIS brand. Under this article, the defendants face up to 20 years in prison.
