The Council of the EU has developed a set of measures against persons destabilizing the situation in Moldova

The Council of the EU has developed a set of measures that suggests the possibility of imposing sanctions against persons responsible for actions that undermine or threaten the sovereignty or independence of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the democratic principles of government, the rule of law, the stability or security of this country. This was reported in a statement published on the website of this body of the European Union.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, noted the constant attempts to destabilize the situation in Moldova. According to him, the new sanctions regime will allow them to fight back.

Among the actions that can lead to the imposition of sanctions against a certain person are listed obstruction of the election process, attempts to violate the constitutional order, as well as financial violations, including the illegal export of capital.

Sanctions include an asset freeze and a ban on the provision of funds. Individuals are expected to be banned from entering the European Union.

The statement of the Council of the EU states that the current Moldovan authorities "have made important progress" in reforming the country. At the same time, it has come under “direct threats to its stability” both from internal pressure groups and from Russia, which is trying to turn Moldova off the path of reform.

On June 27, 2014, Moldova and the EU signed an association agreement, which included the creation of a deep and comprehensive free trade area. In June 2022, the country received the status of a candidate for EU membership.
