President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada, according to which May 8 in Ukraine is proposed to be declared the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945. He stressed that it is on this day of “the greatness of the victory over Nazism” that most peoples of the world celebrate: “It is on May 8 that the world honors the memory of all whose lives were taken by the war. It was on May 8 that the Act of Unconditional Surrender of the Wehrmacht came into force.
On May 9, Europe Day will be celebrated in Ukraine from now on. This is an annual celebration of peace and unity in the countries of the European Union and the Council of Europe. The latter celebrates it on May 5th. In the European Union, Europe Day is also called "Shuman Declaration Day" in honor of French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. On May 9, 1950, he proposed to unite the steel and coal mining industries of France and West Germany, resulting in the European Coal and Steel Community, which became the predecessor of the European Union.
“Now we are fighting against evil together with the free world, together with a free Europe. And we will win! There will be a day of our victory – Victory Day of Ukraine. Will! <…> Today, unity on our continent brings us closer to the celebration of the first day of our peace. And it will be right to celebrate Europe Day together with all free Europe. Today I signed the corresponding decree, and every year tomorrow on May 9 we will honor our historical unity – the unity of all Europeans who destroyed Nazism and will defeat rashism. Unity bringing peace closer," Zelensky said.
