On the night of May 16, Russia launched a massive strike with missiles and drones on Kyiv. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) said that a total of 18 missiles and 9 UAVs of various types were shot down. There have been no official reports from the Russian side, however, pro-Russian Telegram channels publish photos of burning areas of the Ukrainian capital and report on a “powerful combined strike against targets in Kiev and the region.”

The command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that at night they shot down six Shahed-136/131 strike drones, three reconnaissance drones of the Orlan-10 and SuperCum types, as well as six Dagger missiles, nine Caliber missiles and three missiles of the Iskander complexes "and S-400.

At night, the city military administration warned residents about air raid alerts and air defense.

According to preliminary information, the fragments fell in Obolonsky, Shevchenkovsky, Solomensky and Darnitsky districts of Kyiv. The mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, specified that explosions had taken place in several districts and fragments of rockets had fallen. According to preliminary information, three people were injured in the Solomensky district, a building was damaged and several cars caught fire.

The head of the city military administration, Sergei Popko , did not confirm the data on the victims. He wrote that the Russian army attacked Kyiv simultaneously with drones and missiles, launching "the maximum number of missiles in the shortest period of time."
