Russian Ministry of Culture bans screening of Iranian director’s film about religious fanatic who kills women

The Ministry of Culture of Russia has revoked the rental certificate from the Iranian director Ali Abbasi's film "Killer" Sacred Spider ", which was shown in Russian cinemas from May 11. This is reported by the Bulletin of the Film Distributor with reference to the distributor of the tape, the film company Exponenta Film.

According to the company, the letter from the Ministry of Culture states that the film contains information "the distribution of which is prohibited by the legislation of the Russian Federation." Exhibitor Film's representatives didn't specify what exactly they are talking about.

According to the plot of the film "Killer" Sacred Spider "", based on real events, a religious fanatic decides to rid the Iranian city of Mashhad from the "filth" and begins to kill women who are engaged in prostitution. A journalist from Tehran, played by Zara Amir Ebrahimi, is taken to investigate the murders.

For this role, Ebrahimi won the 2022 Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. The film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or.
