Human rights activist Bakhrom Khamroev was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the “terrorism” case for defending the interests of the defendants in the “terrorism” cases. Of this period, he will spend 11 years in a strict regime colony. Khamroev is a member of the human rights center "Memorial". He was found guilty of public incitement to terrorism (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Criminal Code) and organizing the activities of a terrorist organization (Part 1 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code). The reason was posts in social networks about the persecution of Muslims and mass criminal cases about the activities of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization, as well as his complaints and petitions to the courts, including the European Court of Human Rights.
Bakhrom Khamroev, 58, has been held in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in Moscow since February 25, 2022. For many years he has been defending the rights of immigrants from Central Asia and Russian Muslims. In February 2021, the Lyubertsy prosecutor's office went to court to deprive the human rights activist of Russian citizenship.
He himself connects the persecution with human rights activities, it began long before his arrest and final verdict. In 2016 and 2017, FSB officers conducted searches in Khamroev's apartment. Earlier, in 2010, he was beaten by an FSB officer. And in 2011, Khamroev was attacked by unknown people who ambushed him at his entrance. None of these incidents have been investigated.
In 2018, the human rights activist was fined 200,000 rubles, having been found guilty of fictitiously registering two foreigners in his apartment. In 2019, Khamroev was detained and subsequently fined for a one-man picket on Red Square demanding the release of political prisoners in Tajikistan (on the days of the visit of the president of this country to Moscow). A few months later, the human rights activist was once again detained and fined on charges of involvement in organizing the For Fair Elections action in Moscow.
In December 2021, the court took away his apartment, which was in a mortgage, the bank did not return the money that it was supposed to return under the contract – the lawyer's wife told The Insider earlier. According to Zukhra Khamroyeva, the bailiffs were supposed to return the money after the sale of the apartment: “The court ruled to return the money to Bakhrom, but the bailiffs refuse. She told Bakhrom: “We will not return the money to you. You will be suing for 10 years, and the money is in rubles, and they will no longer be worth anything.”
“Bakhrom protected people. He did not look from Hizb ut-Tahrir whether they were rich or poor, he defended everyone. He was not afraid of the authorities and criticized them,” Zukhra said .
