The prosecutor’s office asked for 21 years in prison for human rights activist Bakhrom Khamroev, who helped migrants

The prosecution has requested 21 years in prison for human rights activist Bakhrom Khamroev, the Memorial Center reports . He is accused of publicly calling for terrorism on the Internet (part 2 of article 205.2 of the Criminal Code) and organizing the activities of a terrorist organization (part 1 of article 205.5 of the Criminal Code).

The investigation found “terrorist propaganda” in Khamroev’s Facebook posts: these materials are allegedly related to the activities of the Islamic party Hizb ut-Tahrir banned in Russia. The reason for accusations of organizing terrorist activities was the human rights work of Khamroev. In particular, the case includes a report on political persecution, complaints and petitions to the courts, including the ECtHR.

The case is being heard in the 2nd Western District Military Court.

Bakhrom Khamroev headed the Yordam legal and social support fund for migrants and was a member of the Memorial Human Rights Center until its liquidation. Memorial recognizes Khamroev as a political prisoner.

Khamroev was persecuted for a long time for his human rights activities: he was beaten several times, drugs were planted, and in February 2021 it became known that the Russian authorities were trying to deprive him of Russian citizenship. A year later, the FSB detained the human rights activist in a case of terrorism.
