The Krasnodar Duma agreed on new rules for the improvement of the city, which, among other things, prohibit the use of foreign languages and transliteration on signs, the 93.ru edition reports.
The decision provides a definition of the concept of "foreign language". Krasnodar deputies consider "foreign" those languages whose speakers "live outside the Russian Federation" and which do not belong "to the languages of the peoples of the Russian Federation."
These norms will come into force on September 1, 2023, while entrepreneurs will be given a year to change existing signs. But those businessmen whose establishments are located in the historical center of the city and on its main streets will have to cope until March 1, 2024.
At the same time, you can still use a foreign logo or an inscription in the name. However, only those who have registered such a trademark can do this.
In February, while making a street detour of the city, Krasnodar Mayor Yevgeny Naumov noticed an abundance of signboards in foreign languages. He lamented that it was "somehow unpatriotic" and demanded "to work on this issue."
On February 16, the State Duma adopted a law on the language, according to which the use of foreign words that have Russian counterparts is prohibited. According to him, such words cannot be used in office work and in general, when the Russian language acts as the state language.
