DOXA: A prisoner has died in a Chechen detention center. Shortly before that, he said that he feared for his life and was not going to commit suicide.

Khavazhi Magomadov, a prisoner, died in the temporary detention center of the Regional Department of Internal Affairs of the Staropromyslovsky district of Grozny, writes DOXA. The cause of death was not reported. The publication notes that shortly before the incident, Magomadov told the Civic Assistance Committee that he had fears for his life. He also added that he was not going to commit suicide, and called his case fabricated.

In 2021, Magomadov was sentenced to 25 years in a strict regime colony. Recently, he was in IK-44 in the Kemerovo region, writes DOXA.

The man suffered from infiltrative tuberculosis of the right lung. Despite this, on May 5 he was taken to the pre-trial detention center in Grozny, allegedly for interrogation at the request of the Staropromyslovsky district police department. The investigator was interested in whether Magomadov knew the person involved in another criminal case and whether he sold weapons to him in 2004, to which Magomadov replied in the negative.

According to the Committee's human rights activists, it was in this ROVD that Magomadov was tortured in 2010, after which he confessed to himself. Then they beat him with electric current, poured boiling water on him and shot him in the leg. The medical board confirmed the presence of signs of torture, the court did not take this into account and sentenced Magomadov and his brother to long terms of imprisonment for 19 crimes, including the murder of security officials.

According to human rights activists, the situation could repeat itself. Before the interrogation, Khavazhi was able to hand over a statement to human rights activists, knowing that he was in danger.

“I did not commit any crimes, and if I slander myself, it will mean that I was forced to confess to this with the use of violence and blackmail. I am a deeply religious person, a Muslim, and I am not going to commit suicide, and religion does not allow me to do this, ”Magomadov wrote.

According to DOXA, on May 27, the investigator brought in a man in a mask and hat, who stated that he had bought weapons from Magomadov 19 years ago. The next day, the doctor pronounced Khavazhi dead.

In 2017, Novaya Gazeta wrote that in the same district police department of the Staropromyslovsky district, relatives of two Chechens who told about torture were beaten. They were summoned to a meeting with the head of the Chechen parliament, Magomed Daudov (the same way that he is now calling Prigozhin to “talk like a man”), and they began to beat him at the police department.
