Romanian Foreign Ministry recalls ambassador to Kenya who compared Africans to monkeys

Romania has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, Dragos Tigau, after it was revealed he was making racist remarks, CNN reported.

CNN previously reported that Thiegau made the remark "an African group has joined us" when he saw a monkey in the window. This happened in April during a meeting at the UN building in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, which was attended by Eastern European diplomats.

According to documents obtained by CNN, African colleagues formally condemned Thiegau's remarks. He, in turn, gave them two letters of apology.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry said that it learned about the incident the other day. The agency released a statement expressing its deep regret for what happened and apologizes to everyone who was affected by Thiegau's remarks.
