A third-year student of the medical faculty of the Siberian State Medical University (SibGMU) in Tomsk, Artem Lazarev, died the day after the pharmacology exam, on June 11. He became ill during the exam itself, but the teachers did not stop testing. The rector of the university Yevgeny Kulikov announced the death of Lazarev without specifying a reason in his Telegram channel.
The ambulance, according to the students, was not immediately called, although the university administration claims the opposite.
A post was published on the official channel of the University of Siberian State Medical University stating that the fact of the incident is being checked. However, the post has already been deleted.
According to rector Kulikov, during the exam on June 10, there was a calm atmosphere, "the students were ready, they got only excellent grades." He also wrote that one of the students suddenly lost consciousness, while the rector claims that an ambulance was called immediately.
“An ambulance was immediately called. The call came to the ambulance station at 09:57 with the reason "unconscious", at 10:03 the team of doctors was at the place of the call and began to provide medical care. At 10:04 am, a specialized resuscitation team was sent to the call. At 10:15 she was at the call site. After resuscitation, the patient was taken to the Research Institute of Cardiology, TNRMC, where he died on June 11.”
“From the first minutes, the teachers, myself, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and the Dean were in touch with our colleagues providing medical care. We sincerely mourn and express our condolences to Artyom's relatives," Kulikov said.
However, Lazarev’s fellow students told the Velvet Street Telegram channel that the doctors were not summoned immediately, as there were jammers in the room so that students could not use the Internet and write off. Students also claim that the deceased was an excellent student and did not complain about his health.
“He lost consciousness, then a coma, and then died. We saw how he was carried out on a stretcher – he was pale, ”the channel’s interlocutors say.
The university was unable to promptly answer the questions of the Telegram channel. At the time of writing, the university management also did not respond to The Insider's request.
One of the students who were also present at the exam said that “jammers” were indeed installed at the university, a post about this was published on Twitter by a student friend.
According to the students, at first Lazarev, who became ill, was asked to be taken out of the office, and no one from the medical school gave him first aid. When the ambulance arrived, the doctors “shrugged their shoulders” and said that resuscitation was required. The teacher gave him a "posthumous five", the students say.
The girl also posted a screenshot of messages from the chat, in which students deny the words of rector Kulikov:
The students themselves tried to somehow help a fellow student, while the teaching assistant approached the guy and said that he was “without headphones, he didn’t cheat.”
An article about Lazarev also appeared in the local media, but without students' comments. So, the "Siberian News Agency" published the news about the death of a student, citing Kulikov's words that the university met and accommodated the parents and provides all necessary assistance. The news also says that the union organized a fundraiser for the mother of the deceased.
