A boat carrying migrants from North Africa capsized off the coast of Greece. More than 70 people died

On the night of June 14, a boat with migrants from North Africa capsized off the coast of Greece. At least 78 people died. This was reported by the Greek TV channel ERT.

The boat was heading from Libya to Italy. In total, according to various estimates, there could be from 400 to 700 people on board. The crash occurred in international waters near the city of Pylos. Local authorities say this may have been due to the ship being overloaded.

A search and rescue operation is underway in the crash area, involving Coast Guard and emergency boats, a military frigate, an Air Force helicopter, a drone and private vessels.

The ERT called the shipwreck "the deadliest in the Mediterranean".

Since 2014, nearly 27,000 migrants have died or gone missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean.
