40-year-old activist Anatoly Bereznikov, who in Rostov-on-Don posted leaflets of the Ukrainian project “I Want to Live”, calling on the Russian military to surrender, died in the special detention center of the city, writes “OVD-Info” with reference to his lawyer Irina Gak.
According to Gak, the day before, Bereznikov was tortured with a stun gun. He also complained about threats and that they promised to kill him. Bereznikov was under arrest under the articles of the administrative code of the Russian Federation on petty hooliganism and disobedience to a police officer.
On June 14, Irina Gak, who came to her client, was informed that he was not in the special detention center. Soon she saw the activist's body being carried into a medical vehicle. Bereznikov's lawyers and relatives have repeatedly stated that Bereznikov was tortured.
Bereznikov, who was detained after a search of his apartment, described by police as a "premises inspection", was reportedly regularly sent to "carousel arrests". Their principle is that a person is detained immediately after he leaves the place of serving a sentence, after which new charges are brought against him. Often this practice precedes the initiation of a case of treason, and the Telegram channel of the human rights project “The First Department” reports that such a case was being prepared against Bereznikov.
On June 2, it was reported that prisoner Khavazhi Magomadov died in the temporary detention center of the Staropromyslovsky district of Grozny. Some time before his death, he informed the Civic Assistance Committee about fears for his life, called his case a fabricated one, and said that he was not going to commit suicide. He was accused of selling weapons.
