Esteban Volkov, grandson of Leon Trotsky and last witness to his assassination, has died

In Mexico, at the age of 97, Esteban (Vsevolod) Volkov, the grandson of Leon Trotsky and the last witness to the assassination attempt, died. The Mexican newspaper La Jornada writes about this. The causes of death were not specified.

Volkov was born in Yalta in 1926 to Zinaida Bronstein, the first daughter of Leon Trotsky, and Platon Volkov. His father was exiled to Siberia, and his mother committed suicide. From the age of 13, Volkov lived with Trotsky in Mexico. He witnessed several assassination attempts by Soviet agents on Trotsky. In May 1940, a group of 25 people broke into the politician's house, one of the bullets hit Esteban, Trotsky himself was not injured. On August 20, 1940, Esteban witnessed how Ramon Mercader killed his grandfather with an ice pick.

Volkov created a house-museum in honor of Leon Trotsky. In 2019, he asked Netflix not to show the Russian TV series Trotsky by Alexander Tsekalo and Konstantin Ernst. He wrote that the plot of the series is not related to reality and repeats "Stalin's falsifications".
