A court in the Netherlands has sentenced Spartak Moscow football player Quincy Promes in absentia, who was accused of stabbing his cousin with a knife. According to Telegraaf reporter Saskia Belleman from the courtroom, the football player was sentenced to 18 months in prison. In addition, he must pay €7,000 to the victim as compensation.
Promes, 31, is in Russia and was not present at the meeting. According to Belleman, staying in Russia, the football player will avoid imprisonment, but due to the verdict of the Dutch court, he will actually lose his freedom of movement. The press service of Spartak told RBC Sport that the player's defense would most likely appeal the verdict.
Promes was tried for an incident that occurred in July 2020 in the Dutch city of Abcoude. During a family party, the football player attacked his cousin and stabbed him in the leg, injuring the tendon. In December of the same year, Promes was arrested, but was soon released from custody, after which he left the country. The court acquitted the athlete on charges of attempted murder.
Promes, a native and citizen of the Netherlands, played for Spartak in 2014-2018 and returned to the Moscow club after a break in 2021. At home, he is accused in another criminal case – cocaine smuggling. The prosecutor's office believes that the player was involved in organizing the transportation of two shipments of drugs weighing 650 and 720 kg, which were intercepted by law enforcement officers in Antwerp in 2020.
