The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case into the death of musician and activist Anatoly Berezikov in the Rostov detention center. According to the "First Department", the case was initiated under Part 1 of Art. 110 of the Criminal Code – bringing a person to suicide by threats, cruel treatment or systematic humiliation of the human dignity of the victim.
From the decision, which is at the disposal of the "First Department", it follows that Berezikov died of "mechanical asphyxia" – he hanged himself in his cell at about 9:57 on June 14. In this cell, he was kept under administrative arrest for "petty hooliganism." The authorities passed conflicting information about Berezikov's cellmates to relatives: initially it was reported that he had cellmates, but now the investigation states that he was alone in the cell.
In Rostov-on-Don, Bereznikov posted leaflets of the Ukrainian project “I want to live”, which called on the Russian military to surrender. He was charged with petty hooliganism and disobedience to a police officer. Berezikov repeatedly told his lawyer that he was not going to commit suicide and was afraid for his life due to constant torture and threats. Berezikov was taken to the forest and tortured with a stun gun, threatening with a life sentence. On June 15, he was supposed to leave the special detention center.
