Pakistan and Cuba have not paid tens of millions of dollars in loans to Russia due to Western sanctions

The sanctions imposed on Russia by the countries of the European Union and the United States have led to an increase in overdue debts of Pakistan and Cuba to the Russian Federation, RTVI reports , citing an explanatory note to the order of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. According to it, since March 2022, Pakistan's overdue debts have increased by $30 million, and Cuba by $33 million.

According to Mishustin's order, which was signed on April 11, 2023 and has not yet been approved by Russian President Putin, these countries will be able to pay their debts in rubles. The total debt on a loan allocated to Pakistan in 2001 is $79.1 million. Cuba's debt on nine loans issued by Russia from 2006 to 2019 is $209 million.

In 2023, the Russian authorities allowed the assignment of debts of foreign states to structures that operate in debtor countries and were not subject to sanctions. This was done due to the impossibility of Russia's interstate settlements in dollars and euros.
