Former head of the anti-corruption department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Denis Sugrobov released on parole

The former head of the Main Directorate for Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Denis Sugrobov, convicted of creating a criminal community, was released. The Skopinsky District Court of the Ryazan Region granted his request for parole.

The prosecutor's office did not appeal this decision, TASS reports . Sugrobov is still prohibited from holding positions in law enforcement agencies.

Lieutenant General of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Sugrobov was arrested in 2014 along with a group of subordinates. The head of the GUEBiPK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia was accused of creating a criminal community consisting of police officers. According to investigators, the group falsified evidence, organized provocations against high-ranking officials and businessmen, in order to create the appearance of successful work and achieve career growth and awards.

In 2017, the Moscow City Court found Sugrobov guilty of organizing a criminal community and abuse of power and sentenced him to 22 years in prison. The Supreme Court later commuted the sentence to 12 years.

Eight other people were sentenced to various terms in this case. Sugrobov's deputy Boris Kolesnikov, who was also a suspect, committed suicide in June 2014 by throwing himself out of the window of the Investigative Committee's office, where he was brought for interrogation.
