The prosecution requested 19 years in prison for Dagestan journalist of the Chernovik newspaper Abdulmumin Gadzhiev, who has been in jail for four years. He is accused of participating in a terrorist organization and financing terrorism.
The investigation claims that from 2009 to 2013, the journalist, along with two other defendants in the case – the former founder of the Ansar Foundation Abubakar Rizvanov and businessman Kamal Tambiev – participated in the work of the Congress of the Peoples of Ichkeria and Dagestan and the Supreme Military Majlisul Shura of the Mujahideen Joint Forces Caucasus”, which are recognized as terrorist.
According to investigators, Hajiyev published articles about the Ansar charity foundation in the newspaper, without mentioning in them that part of the money he collected went to the activities of the Islamic State in Syria.
Hajiyev himself denies all accusations.
Memorial and Amnesty International consider Hajiyev a political prisoner. His colleagues link the criminal case to Chernovik's investigations into corruption among Dagestan officials.
