Grandmother of teenager shot dead by French police calls for end to protests

The grandmother of 17-year-old Nael M., who was killed by police in a suburb of the French city of Nanterre, called for an end to the protests. She stated this in an interview with BFM TV.

“We don't want them to destroy shops, buses and schools. They use Nael as an excuse. We want everything to calm down,” she said.

On July 1, the teenager's funeral was held at the Nanterre Mosque. He was shot dead on July 27 when he tried to escape in a car from the police who stopped him. The policeman who shot the teenager has been arrested. After his assassination, mass protests erupted across the country. 45,000 police officers are involved in quelling the riots. Violence on the streets is accompanied by looting of shops and arson of buildings. In Marseille, protesters were dispersed with tear gas, mass events in the country were canceled . After an appeal posted on social media, approximately 300 people tried to gather near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but they were pushed back by the police.

The mayor of the French city of L'Ail-les-Rose Vincent Janbrue said that the rioters attacked his house while he was in the city hall. The attackers tried to ram the building in a car and then set it on fire. The mayor's wife and one of his children were injured.

Due to the current situation, French President Emmanuel Macron canceled his Sunday visit to Germany. Earlier, he called on the parents of young people and the leadership of social networks to help stabilize the situation in the country.
