The Zavodsky District Court of Kemerovo found five employees of the Leninsky OP of the city Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs guilty under Part 2 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (negligence resulting in the death of a person) and sentenced them to a suspended sentence. The terms given to the defendants:
- Mikhail Balashov – 2 years probation
- Dmitry Taritsyn – 2 years probation
- Anna Ponomareva – 2 years probation
- Maria Dunaeva – 1.5 years probation
- Kristina Yudintseva – 1.5 years probation
Also, the defendants in the case were deprived of the right to work in law enforcement agencies for a period of one to two years. The police pleaded not guilty and demanded a verdict of not guilty.
In 2020, the Leninsky police department received several calls with reports of women screaming in one of the residential buildings in the city, but the police did not respond in time. As a result, 23-year-old Vera Pekhteleva was killed by her ex-boyfriend, Vladislav Kanyus. He was later sentenced to 17 years in prison in a strict regime colony.
The court found that Pekhteleva caused at least 111 injuries and bodily harm. The murder happened when the girl came to Kanyus to pick up her things. The defendant, having learned about Pekhteleva's new relationship, did not let her out of the apartment, took her phone away, and then beat her "using various objects, inflicted several stab wounds and squeezed her neck with a cord."
In June, it was reported that 25-year-old Vladislav Kanyus avoided a 17-year sentence for the crime by going to war in Ukraine. Human rights activist Alena Popova spoke about this with reference to the mother of the deceased.
