Journalist Yelena Milashina discharged from hospital after brutal beating in Chechnya

Novaya Gazeta journalist Yelena Milashina, severely beaten in Chechnya, was discharged from the hospital. This was announced by the former editor-in-chief of the radio station "Echo of Moscow" Alexei Venediktov.

On July 4, Yelena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov, who flew to Chechnya to attend a hearing on the case of Zarema Musayeva, were attacked by unknown men in masks. The journalist later said that they beat her with polypropylene pipes, shaved her head and doused her with brilliant green, threatened to kill her, broke her fingers and forced her to eat earth.

Venediktov and editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov flew on a private plane to Beslan (North Ossetia), where Milashina and Nemov were taken by ambulance from Chechnya, and took the victims to Moscow. Milashina was treated at the Botkin hospital.

The Investigative Committee of Russia opened a criminal case. However, there are still no suspects in the case, and the Chechen authorities have said that the attack on the journalist and lawyer was a provocation against the republic.

Earlier, Milashina was threatened by the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, who called her a terrorist in one of his posts.

More details about the story of Milashina and Nemov about what happened can be found in the material “They clearly understood the limits beyond which it is forbidden to go.” Milashina and Nemov told how they were beaten and forced to eat earth.”
