A court in the Murmansk region sentenced senior lieutenant Dmitry Vasilets to two years and five months in a colony-settlement for refusing to participate in the war with Ukraine. It is reported by "Mediazona" with reference to the lawyer Elvira Tarasova.
Vasilets was found guilty of failure to comply with an order given in the prescribed manner in the context of an armed conflict (paragraph 2.1 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code). A criminal case was brought against him in October last year.
Senior Lieutenant Vasilets served in Pechenga in the Murmansk region, in February 2022 he was sent to war. Five months later, he went on vacation to Buryatia to the parents of a deceased colleague and there he "accepted the philosophy of Buddhism." At the end of his vacation, he refused to return to fight, explaining that this was contrary to his convictions. After that, they filed a case against him.
Mediazona clarifies that Vasilets became the first known defendant in the case of non-execution of the order after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine.
