Irretrievable losses of the Russian army in Ukraine may amount to more than 90 thousand people – “Important stories”

Russia's irretrievable losses in the war with Ukraine could be more than 90,000 people, Important Stories writes , citing two sources. One of them is a former officer of the Russian special services, and the second is an active officer of the FSB.

Irretrievable losses are the number of those killed, missing, dying from wounds in hospitals, as well as the wounded who can no longer return to military service.

The last time the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on the losses of the army was in September, on the day the mobilization was announced. The head of the defense department, Sergei Shoigu, then said that 5,937 Russian servicemen were killed in the war. He did not name the number of those who were wounded, but he assured that more than 90% of them had already supposedly returned to duty. Since the beginning of the war, the Ministry of Defense has spoken about the number of Russian military dead only three times.

At the same time, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) on October 11 stated that more than 63,000 Russian military had already died during the war. The Ukrainian side also reported on the destruction of 2513 tanks, 5175 armored vehicles, 1506 artillery systems, 353 MLRS, 181 air defense systems, 269 aircraft and 235 helicopters.

The figure, called "Important stories," is close to the estimate given by British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace in early September. He stated that more than 25 thousand Russian soldiers were killed in Ukraine, and the total number of losses is more than 80 thousand people. “We generally believe that Russia’s losses amount to more than 80 thousand people, if we count the dead, wounded and deserters. That’s 80,000 in six months, as opposed to 15,000 in ten years in Afghanistan,” he said.
