Doctors amputated both hands of Olympic figure skating champion Roman Kostomarov. According to Match TV, citing a source familiar with the situation, the first operation took place last week.
“The first amputation on Kostomarov’s hand was carried out last week, the doctors postponed the decision to amputate the second hand until the beginning of this week,” the source said.
On February 7, it became known that both feet were amputated to Kostomarov due to tissue necrosis caused by complications from pneumonia. The athlete was taken to intensive care in early January after performing in Ilya Averbukh's ice show outdoors at a temperature of minus 20 degrees. In the hospital, he was connected to ECMO (a method of artificial blood oxygen saturation in acute respiratory failure).
At the same time, the mother of the figure skater Valentin Kostomarov, in an interview with the SHOT Telegram channel , denied reports of amputation of the hands. “And in general: half of what they write now is not true. We will not give any new information for now. There is a time for everything,” she said.
Kostomarov, now 46, paired with Tatyana Navka, winning the 2006 Olympics with her. He is also a two-time world champion, a three-time European champion, a three-time figure skating champion of Russia and a three-time winner of the Grand Prix finals.
