Supporters of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who announced his resignation, will prevent former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak from taking the post of prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party. This is reported by the Financial Times.

According to the publication, officials accuse Sunak of instigating Johnson's premature departure. More than 50 officials left the government after he and Health Minister Sajid Javid resigned. Johnson announced his resignation two days later.

After that, Sunak put forward his candidacy for the post of leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of Great Britain. On July 8, he posted a video in which he promised to put an end to "consolation tales" alluding to Johnson's activities as prime minister.

According to the FT, one of the ministers loyal to Johnson said that his allies would try to make sure that Sunak could not win the election. “Rishi will get everything he deserves for leading the process of overthrowing the prime minister,” he was quoted as saying by the publication.

Johnson announced his decision to step down as British Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party on July 7. He stated that he would carry out his duties until a new person was appointed to the position. Johnson stressed that the selection process must begin now.

The decision to resign was preceded by a series of departures of officials from the government. It began after MP Chris Pincher was appointed to a government post, who was accused of sexual harassment.
