Former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak, 42, remains the only candidate for prime minister as House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race of her own accord. The fact that Sunak will become the 57th prime minister, according to The Times.

The publication notes that Sunak will be declared the leader of the Conservative Party.

Earlier, Boris Johnson refused to run for the post of leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of Great Britain. On October 20, Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation. She stayed in office for only 45 days, setting an anti-record for the duration of the premiership in the history of the country.

In July, the Financial Times reported that supporters of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had announced his resignation, would prevent former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak from taking the post of prime minister and leader of the Conservative Party. According to the publication, officials accuse Sunak of instigating Johnson's premature departure - after Sunak and Health Minister Sajid Javid resigned, more than 50 officials left the government. Two days later, Johnson announced that he was resigning.
