Canada reinstated sanctions against Nord Stream equipment

Canada has restored sanctions against equipment for the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which it lifted in order to repair Siemens turbines. About it writes Reuters with reference to the Canadian authorities.

Sanctions against Russia were lifted in July 2022 at the request of Germany. At that time, repaired Nord Stream turbines were located in Montreal, which Canada could not transfer to Russia due to sanctions. As a result, they were sent to Germany, which became the "transshipment" point of the route. “It was a decision we made. This is exactly what Germany asked us to do,” said Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.

Canada called its actions an attempt to help Europe, which is in an energy crisis. Joly also stressed that if the turbines were not returned, the Kremlin could blame Canada for it: “Canada does not want to give Vladimir Putin a single chance to use energy as a weapon for energy blackmailing Europe.”
