Olympic ice dancing champion Roman Kostomarov had both feet amputated due to complications from pneumonia, TASS reports citing a source.

“Unfortunately, both feet had to be amputated. The operation went without incident, in general, the body is on the mend. Now there is a fight for hands. Romance in mind. The general condition is improving. But he continues to be in intensive care under the close supervision of doctors, ”a source familiar with the situation told TASS.

At the same time, according to RIA Novosti-Sport, we are talking about the amputation of part of one leg: “Gangrene probably developed as a result of complications after pneumonia and the patient was on ECMO,” the source said.

According to him, the use of ECMO was the only chance to save the skater's life.

In early January, Kostomarov was admitted to intensive care with pneumonia. The day before, the athlete performed outdoors in the show of Ilya Averbukh at a temperature of about minus 20 degrees. Ilya Averbukh himself, after Kostomarov's illness, did not comment on the organization of his shows.

Roman Kostomarov is a Russian figure skater who competed in ice dancing with Tatyana Navka. Paired with her is the 2006 Olympic champion, two-time world champion, three-time European champion, three-time Grand Prix final winner, 1996 world junior champion and three-time Russian champion.
