Italian Prime Minister George Meloni spoke in the Italian parliament, responding to deputies who oppose the supply of weapons to Ukraine, promoting the option of negotiations with Moscow on a possible truce through territorial concessions from Ukraine. El Heraldo writes about it. In particular, two parties oppose the supply of weapons to Ukraine: the League and the Power of Italy.
Meloni's speech in government appeared on YouTube and Telegram channels.
“Dear Elisa Scutella says: “Stop.” I think it is necessary to say this to Putin. I'm surprised she's telling us this, because maybe it's a betrayal of the position. Because it means to approve the invasion of Ukraine,” Meloni said. She stressed that the cessation of military assistance to Ukraine in the current conditions means the approval of the Russian invasion.
“You know, I am not so hypocritical as to confuse the word “invasion” with the word “peace”. And so I believe that we should not approve of the invasion of Ukraine. This does not mean that we should not work on a peace plan,” the Italian Prime Minister said.
Meloni said that the situation in Ukraine is much more complicated than propagandists make it out to be. Meloni invited opponents to imagine what peace talks between Ukraine and Russia could be like now.
“Let's say you think that you need to sit down at the negotiating table. Should we or not at the same time demand that Russia cease hostilities and withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine? Or do you think that we should reconsider the borders of Ukraine? Or do you think that we should give Moscow the territories it has occupied?” he addressed the deputies.
At the end of February 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and George Meloni came up with the text of a declaration concluded between the two states. The document confirms the unconditional support of Ukraine.
