The original case of 19-year-old Begoyan was handled by a lawyer by appointment, but he was dissatisfied with his work. He asked to replace the defender with Adel Khaydarshin, who is collaborating with the Solidarity Zone. On March 7, the lawyer sent a request for familiarization with the materials of the criminal case to the investigator of the FSB for the Chuvash Republic R. O. Vorobyov. However, two weeks later, on March 20, he was refused. The reason was indicated that Begoyan allegedly refused the services of Khaydarshin. On March 22, the lawyer visited the activist in the pre-trial detention center. Begoyan said that he did not plan to refuse his services, but the FSB officers put a lot of pressure on him.
“My client was told: you will continue to cooperate with the lawyer by agreement, we will do everything to give the maximum term. Conversations with Begoyan are carried out in the absence of a lawyer and not even an investigator, but operatives. They take him to an office without cameras and already there they conduct a “conversation”. They said that they could allegedly take him away for investigative actions to the forest, to the scene of the crime, and do something with him. If you continue to work with this lawyer, we will take you out of the pre-trial detention center. They also threatened to complicate life in the pre-trial detention center,” Khaidarshin told the Solidarity Zone.
Begoyan was detained in December 2022. During the arrest, the FSB officers threatened Begoyan with torture, put a bag over his head and frightened him with weapons.
