The European Union has agreed on the requirements for providing the territory of the association with electric and hydrogen filling stations. According to the adopted document, by the end of the decade, all major transport routes will be provided with new type of filling stations, which will speed up the energy transition and abandon the use of cars with internal combustion engines (ICEs). Bloomberg writes about this with reference to the decision following the meeting of EU energy ministers.

According to the document, by 2026, key highways should be equipped with electric filling stations every 60 kilometers. By 2028, similar stations for electric trucks should appear on key roads every 120 kilometers. The issue will take the longest to resolve with the provision of hydrogen, such stations will have to be equipped every 200 kilometers of key roads and routes, and the plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2031.

“The new rules will help make driving and charging a new generation car as easy and convenient as a car that depends on gasoline. We must decarbonize the transport sector, which still accounts for a huge part of emissions, ”the agency quotes MEP Ismail Ertug as saying.

Providing infrastructure is a prerequisite for a successful global energy transition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and phasing out new combustion engine vehicles. According to the approved program, the EU will completely abandon internal combustion engines by 2035, exceptions are provided only for cars that will be refueled with environmentally friendly fuel. This exception was lobbied by Germany.

The document also stipulates that by 2040, 90% of all freight traffic should become carbon neutral. In February, EU countries, as well as MEPs, agreed on a complete ban on the production of cars with internal combustion engines from 2035. Exceptions are provided for cars on environmentally friendly fuel.
