At least 78 people have died in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, in a stampede that erupted during a charity event. According to Aljazeera, people came to the Bab el-Yemen area hoping to receive a donation of about $10, which was distributed by merchants on the eve of Ramadan.
The Interior Ministry said that the event was not coordinated with local authorities and that an investigation is currently underway. It is also reported about the arrest of the organizers of the event. There are also children among the dead, writes AFP, citing a Houthi security official. According to Sky News Arabia, there may be as many as 90 dead.
Sana'a has been under the control of pro-Iranian rebels, the Houthis, since 2014, when they toppled the country's internationally recognized government. The Houthis tried to restore order by shooting into the air, however, according to eyewitnesses, they could provoke a panic with this.
